Repairman, Maintenance – ProductionWhen unforseen things happen, I get to fix it
How did you join Ålö?
I had injured myself at my previous job and Ålö was looking for turners, which I was trained for. My first employment was a temporary position and after that I had the chance to continue, I have been here since 1988.
In a few words could you describe your main tasks in your position?
Right now, I work in the Maintenance Department. My job is about maintaining the plant, doing preventive work and repairing what breaks, so it's both emergency events and preventive work. Every day, one of us in the department is also responsible for the emergency phone, which means that you get a call when something happens in a department. It can be something that breaks, for example at the Painting Department, then I must go there and fix it. Rarely does a full working day go by without something happening. We also have scheduled tasks that for example involve, checking lifting aids and making sure things are whole. It's a very diverse job.
What type of background and personality is needed for this job?
I would say you need an interest in repairing or working with machines. In my department, most of my coworkers are electricians but I'm not, I'm a mechanic. I have been in this department for 8 years, when I started at Ålö I was working with lathe, then I was at the factory Ålö Cylinder, I have also worked at the Welding Department here in Brännland. To work in Maintenance Department, it is good to have knowledge of the different departments within the company since we are doing work everywhere. I really like this job.
What motivates you at work?
What motivates me the most is when something breaks down, for example when a loader crashes on welding because then I must go there and find a solution to the problem. When something breaks is probably what managers like the least if I would guess, which is understandable because it will be a stop in the production, but I think it's most fun because when unforeseen things happen, I get to fix it.
